Kids love a trip to the zoo. This storytime incorporates puppets to make it more like a real trip to the zoo!

Puppets: We Went to the Zoo One Day
(tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)
We went to the zoo one day,
Zoo one day, zoo one day
We went to the zoo one day, and this is what we saw: lion! (pop up a lion puppet!)
What does the lion say? Growl!
Repeat with other animals.
Lion Giraffe Elephant Snake Zebra Alligator Monkey Ostrich was the puppets I had to use. Adjust to your library. The toddlers loved seeing the puppets come from behind my table and petting them!

Song: Rockin at the Zoo by Laura Doherty with instruments
All the animals are rockin’ and rollin’ at the zoo
All the animals are rockin’ and rollin’ at the zoo
They’re having a party and getting into the groove
All the lions are roaring at the zoo.
All the monkeys are swinging at the zoo.
All the seals are clapping at the zoo.
All the penguins are waddling at the zoo.
All the elephants are stomping at the zoo.
Dance……
All the animals are rockin’ and rollin’ at the zoo
All the animals are rockin’ and rollin’ at the zoo
They’re having a party and getting into the groove
Book: Peek-a-Zoo by Marie Torres Cimarusti
Feltboard: Who Lives in the Zoo?
Cock-a-doodle doo!
Who lives in the zoo?
Its neck is thin and very long.
Its tail is short. It legs are strong.
Cock-a-doodle doo!
Who lives in the zoo?
It has a trunk that it doesn’t pack.
People can ride upon its back.
Cock-a-doodle doo!
Who lives in the zoo?
Around its head is a circle of fur.
It always roars. It sometimes purrs.
Cock-a-doodle doo!
Who lives in the zoo?
It climbs up into the forest trees.
It nibbles honey made by bees.
Cock-a-doodle doo!
Who lives in the zoo?
It has its house upon its back.
It moves very slowly along the track.
Cock-a-doodle doo!
Who lives in the zoo?
This animal swings up in a tree.
And eats all the bananas it can see.
Cock-a-doodle doo!
Who lives in the zoo?
It is black and white stripes
Can’t be cleaned with any wipes.

Craft: Fork Painting Lions
I used a large sheet of paper and encouraged the kids to make a mane for the lion, then add his face at the end.
