Summer means lots of insects. Kids may notice them outside when they are playing or inside their house. I always try to use the correct term “insects” since all bugs are insects but not all insects are bugs.

Book: The Very Lazy Lady Bug by Isobel Finn

Feltboard: Butterfly Colors
Each toddler came up and remove a butterfly corresponding to the correct color when I called on them.
The first to come to the garden bed
Is a lovely butterfly of brilliant RED.
Then in comes another and that makes two.
Fly right in, my friend of BLUE.
“The garden is fine, the best I’ve seen,”
says the butterfly of softest GREEN.
Our garden needs a sunny fellow,
Fly on in, butterfly with wings of YELLOW.
Little friend of PURPLE, fly in too.
The garden is waiting for a color like you.
ORANGE, orange, you’re waited so long.
Fly right in, where you belong.
Butterflies, butterflies, you’re such a sight!
Flying together – what a delight!

Active Song: Ants Go Marching by Traditional
I handed each toddler a cut out ant and we marched around the room.
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one,
The little one stops to suck her thumb
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain,
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Continue the song with the following verses…
The ants go marching two by two,……
The little one stops to tie her shoe
The ants go marching three by three,……
The little one stops to climb a tree
The ants go marching four by four,…….
The little one stops to shut the door
The ants go marching five by five,……..
The little one stops to take a dive.

Active Song: Butterfly, Butterfly (with scarves)
Butterfly, butterfly dancing all around (wave scarves)
Butterfly, butterfly now you’re on the ground (lower scarves to floor)
In a tree you’re hard to see (raise scarves)
Now you’ve flown away (hide scarf behind back)
Butterfly, oh butterfly
Please come back some day!
